Mauritius is chairing the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) for the period 2010-2011. This responsibility was passed on to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Dr. Arvin Boolell by the Secrétaire d’Etat Français chargé de la Coopération et de la Francophonie, Mr. Alain Joyandet, during the 26th IOC Council of Ministers meeting held on 8 June in Reunion Island.
Topics examined at the Council meeting were the fight against piracy at sea, the reinforcement of inter-island trade exchanges and the implementation of a regional strategy pertaining to fisheries and aquaculture. The Malagasy crisis was also discussed with a view to finding a solution to the problem.
The IOC, which was created in 1984, is an inter-governmental body regrouping Madagascar, Mauritius, the Seychelles, Comoros Islands and France which acts on behalf of Reunion Island.
