Pyramid and Ponzi schemes feed on our need for security and the desire to believe it is possible to become wealthy with ease. This is despite evidence from scandals such as Fidentia — through which businessman Arthur Brown defrauded, among others, about 50,000 widows and orphans of mine workers — and recent allegations levelled at financial asset manager Jacobus Kellermann of engaging in a Ponzi scheme.
