Milan J. N. Meetarbhan (Mauritius) President of the Assembly of the International Seabed Authority for 2012


Mr. Milan Jaya Nyamrajsingh Meetarbhan, who was today elected President of the Assembly of the International Seabed Authority at the opening of the Eighteenth Session (2012), is Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations since January 2011.

Mr. Meetarbhan has had a long and distinguished record of public service, and also served for ten years in the private sector and corporate world. He was Senior Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister, Legal Advisor to the Ministry of Finance, Board member of the Stock Exchange Commission and Chairman of Mauritius Telecom. Mr. Meetarbhan headed the Law School at the University o f Mauritius before he served as head of the Financial Services Commission from 2005 to 2010.

In 2011 and 2012, Mr. Meetarbhan co-chaired the United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea.

Mr. Meetarbhan studied law in London and Paris. He was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple and then obtained a Diplome d'Etudes Approfondies en Droit des Relations Internationales et des Organisations Internationales from the Sorbonne, a Diplome d'Etudes Superieures Specialisées en Diplomatie et Relations Internationales from Université Paris XI and a Doctorate in International Law from the Sorbonne.
