Mauritius: Attorney General Opens Workshop on Prosecutorial Standards

“My Office is fully conscious of the exigencies of the profession and of the importance of training of Prosecutors and we shall do everything possible to assist on that basis”, said the Attorney General, Mr. Yatin Varma, this morning during the launching of a three-day workshop being held at the Bar Council.

The Attorney General stressed that Prosecutors should at all times maintain the honour and dignity of their profession, always conduct themselves professionally, in accordance with the law and the rules and ethics of their profession and strive to be, and to be seen to be, consistent, independent and impartial. Mr. Varma underlined that the duty of the Prosecutor is to seek justice and not merely convict.

In his allocution the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Satyajit Boolell, urged Prosecutors to at all times adhere to the highest standards of integrity and always serve and protect the public interest, as well as respect, protect and uphold the universal concept of human dignity and human rights.

High profile members of the Mauritius Law Society are conducting the Workshop along with Mrs. Elizabeth Howe, member of the International Association of Prosecutors. Law practitioners both from the public and private sectors are attending.

The following themes will be debated during: Function and responsibility of the Prosecutor; Contempt of Court and Freedom of Speech; Dusting off the Penal Code; Handling effectively case preparation and conduct of criminal litigation; Criminology; Standards before the Supreme Court in appeal cases; Human Rights in the administration of justice; Prosecutorial standards; Prosecution or Persecution and Functions and principles of ethics for Prosecutors.
