Mauritius: Minister Boolell among Top 10 of Global Tax 50

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Dr. Arvin Boolell, is listed among the top 10 in the latest annual selection of the Global Tax 50 by the International Tax Review (ITR) November 2012.

The selection made by the Review is based on the recognisable impact on tax practice and administration made by individuals and organisations during the last 12 months.

ITR highlights Dr Boolell’s willingness to renegotiate the India-Mauritus Tax Treaty in accordance with the double objective of strengthening the reputation of Mauritius as a trustworthy place to do business and that of addressing some of India’s concerns in line with international best practices.

International Tax Review acknowledges the importance of these negotiations in terms of their potential implications for foreign investment and for the economy of Mauritius.  Aspects such as Minister Boolell’s determination to uphold the global business community and protect the financial interests of Mauritius are particularly underlined.

The Review concludes the section on Dr Boolell by emphasising his determination to further develop Mauritius as a financial hub and quotes him: ‘The Mauritius financial centre remains a preferred jurisdiction for the international investor community to structure investments into India and is increasingly being used by Indian businessmen and others to conduct business with Africa.
