Following the Chinese government’s announcement in 2006 that it would support the establishment of economic and trade cooperation zones abroad as part of its ‘Going Global’ strategy, many African countries expressed interest in hosting such zones, but ultimately only six countries were selected through a competitive bidding process. Presently, special economic zones (SEZ) are under construction in Egypt, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Nigeria and Zambia.
