The OECD has been working for more than a decade to bring greater transparency to international financial dealings. As part of its contribution to the G20 process, it provided G20 leaders with information on which countries and territories do not at present provide banking information to foreign tax authorities in response to inquiries. The ability to provide such information is fundamental for fair, open and transparent financial dealings, notably in relation to efforts to combat tax evasion, and in the last few weeks a large number of countries and territories have announced their intention to comply with OECD standards of exchange of information. The European Commission, for its part, has been coordinating efforts by EU countries to stem tax cross-border evasion through the European Savings Directive.

The meeting between Mr. Kovács and Mr. Gurría is not open to the press, but they will brief journalists after their talks at 12 noon.
