Mauritius Broadband Policy Framework Selected as Development Model

The Broadband Commission of the International Telecommunication Union has selected Mauritius to showcase its ‘Broadband Policy Framework’ as a model of development for other countries.

The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Mr Tassarajen Pillay Chedumbrum, made this announcement at a discussion forum on Building Sustainable knowledge Societies and the use of ICTs which was held on 28 September 2012 in Cyber Tower 1 at Ebène Cybercity.  The case study, through the Broadband Policy 2012-2020, addresses the development of the ICT sector in Mauritius which sets out a strategic vision and establishes national goals for broadband roll-out.

In his address at the forum, the Minister recalled that access to basic services and information is a precondition, which enables people to fully participate in the advancement of society.  We are talking about inclusive growth, he said while pointing out that the prominence of the digital economy presents huge opportunities for this growth.

According to Mr Pillay Chedumbrum, countries with high level of digital literacy and technology adoption are more innovative and productive.  They are capturing a greater share of the world’s trade and investment and are creating better jobs, he noted.

ICT in Mauritius is at the core of sustained economic and societal development, both as a driver and enabler of economic development.  The sector is now positioned as the third pillar, contributing 6.7% to GDP and employing some 15,000 knowledge workers.

The discussion forum was aimed at consolidating and unfolding further reflections on building sustainable knowledge societies.  It served as a platform to share ideas and learn more about the best practices of an improved ICT ecosystem for inclusiveness.  The Director Knowledge Societies Division, Communication and Information Sector, Dr Indrajit Banerjee, from the UNESCO, Paris, France was the resource person.
